Lecture 14: auditory physiology Flashcards
Pinna
proper terminology for cartilage outside of head
two features of the pinna
gather sound waves and channels them through the ear
Bones in the middle ear and what do they do?
collectively known as the middle ear ossicles: incus, mealleus and stapes hlep getting sound outside in the air into the fluid in the inner ear
What happens in the cochlea?
turns wave frequencies into action potentials
Cochlear at cellular level: hair cells innovated by nerves…
- inner hair cells - afferent nerves (send info from ear to brain)
- outer hair cells - efferent nerves (receiving info and acting on it)
Reserach: outer hair cells
Responds to different frequencies more so than others (suggesting it is tuned to specific frequencies)
Positive feedback amplification
sound comes into basilar membrane, ICH voltage change (which sends to auditory nerve) but also OCH voltage change influencing OCH length chnage which then sends more info to ICH voltage change and nerve
Phase locking
Inner hair cells stimulate phase locked action potentials on auditory nerve
