Lecture 13: Nature of sound Flashcards
What is sound?
one or more moves of pressure fluctuating through the air that we pick up at hears (our eadrums respond to pressure waves)
What is frequency
The air pressure going up and down (this is represented by the sine wave)
What is pitch
Our perception of this frequency - our experience of frequency
What is amplitude
small changes in air pressure changes amplitude: loudness - measured in Pa
What is intensity
the variance in pressure (amount of energy in the sound
What is loudness?
The psychological term for the combination of amplitude, intensity and sound level
sound level
is the level of sound measured in dB
Whats a detection threshold?
The absolute threshold of hearing if above the line we can hear it, if below we cannot.
research: magnitude estimation of loudness
when asked to estimate how loud other sounds were when given a sample sound, they would underestimate the louder sound and over estimate the quieter sound
what are complex tones?
multiple pure tones added together (harmonic tones)
How can complex tones be displayed/presented?
spectogram
How does loudness increase?
not in proportion with sound pressure but much more slowly
