Lecture 14 Flashcards
Are caliciviruses generally considered to be stable within their environment?
Yes. Survive in their environment for a very long period to time
Name three main calci/birnaviruses of clinical significance:
Rabbit Haemorrhagic disease virus (RHDV1), Feline Calicivirus, Birnaviridae
What are the three viruses that are part of the F3 vaccination protocol within cats?
Calicivirus, Herpes, Parvo
What are the general effects of Infectious bursal disease on the host?
Immunosuppression and increased susceptibility to other . viruses
What is a prion?
Only protein, no DNA or RNA
Why are prionoses called spongiform encephalopathies?
Cause tissues within the brain to have a sponge like appearance
What is the prion hypothesis?
- We ingest the scrapie prion protein
- It sits next to our normal proteins and causes them to fold in an incorrect way
- Prion proteins then cause disease
Describe the conversion in the structure of the protein when it is converted from PrPC to PrPSC:
Results in the conversion of an alpha helix to a beta-pleated sheet . In the process making it resistant to proteases.
How is sCJD different to vCJD?
sCJD has a much older age onset and death is usually a lot quicker
