Lecture 11 Flashcards
What is the genome of Rhabdoviruses?
Negative sense single stranded RNA
What type of virus is this?
Rhabdovirus
Are Rhabdoviruses typically enveloped?
Yes
Where does the replication of Rhabdoviruses occur?
Rhabdovirus replication is typically cytoplasmic
Are Rhabdoviruses normally stable within their environment?
Typically Rhabdoviruses are relatively stable within their environment. However, they can be inactivated via the use of detergents
What are the two major types of clinical rabies that are often described? What are their clinical symptoms?
Furious rabies = hyper-excitement + a tendancy to bite
Dumb rabies = characterised by depression and paralysis
Brieftly describe the clinical course of Rabies within the host:
- We get bitten
- Sits in the muscle quietly- undergoes slow and quiet replication
- Jumps into the end plates of our nerves- travels up the nerves and then enters the brain
- Goes into our hindbrain
- Goes into our salivary glands and this is typically where we will get transmission
What is a usefull means of prevention of rabies within cattle?
Put anti-coagulants on the backs of the cattle that will lead to destruction of large amount of the population of the cattle
Describe two techniques that are commonly used in the diagnosis of rabies:
- impression smears of the hippocampus of infected animals using Sellars stain and then examining for Negri Bodies
- Immunofluresence of viral antigen in the brain or spinal cord
What are the two epidemiological forms of rabies rabies?
Urban Rabies- involving cats and dogs
Sylvatic Rabies- involving wild animals
What genotype is the Australian Bat Lyssavirus (ABLV)?
Genotype 7
