Q

Are Rhabdoviruses normally stable within their environment?

Q

What are the two major types of clinical rabies that are often described? What are their clinical symptoms?

Q

Brieftly describe the clinical course of Rabies within the host:

A
  1. We get bitten
  2. Sits in the muscle quietly- undergoes slow and quiet replication
  3. Jumps into the end plates of our nerves- travels up the nerves and then enters the brain
  4. Goes into our hindbrain
  5. Goes into our salivary glands and this is typically where we will get transmission

Q

What is a usefull means of prevention of rabies within cattle?

Q

Describe two techniques that are commonly used in the diagnosis of rabies:

A
  • impression smears of the hippocampus of infected animals using Sellars stain and then examining for Negri Bodies
  • Immunofluresence of viral antigen in the brain or spinal cord
