Lecture 14 Flashcards
Isoelectronic
Having same number and configuration as another species
Transition metal ions
Rarely attain noble-gas configurations because they would loose too many electrons
Metals
Lose their electrons from their valence shells, form positive ions, and cations
Nonmetals
Added electrons to their valence shells, form negative ions, anions share electrons with their metalloids or other non metals
Electron affinity
Measure of ease with which atom accepts electrons
1st electron affinity
Energy change accompanying addition of 1 mail electrons to 1 mol gaseous atoms/ions
2nd electron affinity
Always positive because energy required to overcome electrostatic repulsion
Atomic radius
Radius of a neutral atom
Ionic radius
The radius of an electrically charged atom
