Lecture #12 - General: Structural Drawings Flashcards
Explain the steel handbook.
detailed information on the design and detailing of structural steel, used with the National Building Code of Canada
What are some structural steel shapes?
W shapes, WWF welded wide flange, HP Shapes, S shapes, standard channels, miscellaneous channels, angles, structural tees, HSS - round , square, rectangular
Explain everything for a W410x39 steel shape.
W=wide flange designation, 410=nominal depth (mm), 39=weight (kg/m)
What are W shapes typically used for?
beams, columns
How can you produce various weights with the same nominal depth for W shapes?
by varying roller sizes and spacings
Explain L102x102x9.5.
L=angle designation, 102x102=size of legs (mm), 9.5=thickness of legs (mm)
What are steel angles typically used for?
steel connections, bracing, shear connectors
Explain C100x11.
C=channel designation, 100=nominal depth (mm), 11=weight (kg/m)
What are some typical uses of C shapes?
truss members, bracing, lintels, connectors
What are hollow structural sections (HSS)?
hollow square, rectangular, round, and oval shapes
How are hollow structural sections made?
cold- or hot-forming steel strip (sheet) and welding longitudinally
What are HSS shapes used for?
trusses, structurally efficient column sections, and where simple external profile is desirable
What is type R rebar for?
general basic use
What is type W rebar for?
when improved weldability or ductility is required
What is the difference between type R and type W rebar?
chemical composition
What are some other kinds of rebar?
galvanized, rebar mesh, epoxy coated
What is the deformation role in rebar?
deformation rolled onto the surface of the bar helps it to bond tightly to concrete, strain compatibility cannot be achieved if the bond is lost
Explain welded wire fabric (WWF).
type of reinforcing grid of wires spaced 2 to 12 inches apart, specified by wire gauge and spacing
What is the typical use of welded wire fabric?
horizontal surfaces
What does welded wire fabric come in?
mats or rolls
What is the advantage of welded wire fabric?
labor savings
Explain a field weld.
weld must be done in the field during erection, other welds are done earlier in the fabricators shop
Explain weld all around.
weld should be carried fully around the perimeter of the joining pieces
What does a backup bar do?
Supports the first pass of the weld and is placed on the side of the joint opposite the arrow
What is a spacer?
maintains a gap between the pieces to be joined prior to welding
What type of bolt is most frequently used in structural steel work?
high strength bolt
What are high strength bolts made of?
heat-treated steel, either carbone steel or high-strength alloy steel
What is the specified minimum tensile strength for A325 bolts (hint: US units)?
825 MPa
What is the specified minimum tensile strength for A490 bolts (hint: US units)?
1035 MPa
What is the specified minimum tensile strength for A325M bolts (hint: SI)?
830 MPa
What is the specified minimum tensile strength for A490M bolts (hint: SI units)?
1040 MPa
