What did David Livingstone do?
He was a Missionary and Explorer, went to southern africa and converted people.(1813-1873)
What did Henry Morton Stanley do?
He went searching for Livingstone (found him), His journalism caused africa to become less “dark”, discovering resources in africa such as palm oil, wood, animal products.
What is Quinine?
A drug that comes from the bark of a tree in Africa, used as a drug to defend against the disease known as malaria.
Zulu Kingdom
Relatively new people of south africa, only had been there for a few hundred years.
King Shaka
King of the Zulu kingdom, credited with being a superior military tactician. Unified the Zulu territory. (1816-1828)
What did Dingane do?
1828-1840(King of zulu), fought the Boer(Dutch farmers) intrusion into Zulu lands.
What was the Cecil Rhodes?
Railroads, diamonds, and imperialism. Kitchener fights guerilla war against Dutch “Boers” (Farmers) resisting foreign intrusion on their white minority-ruled country.
What was the Berlin Conference?
(1884-1885) A meeting between European leadres to carve up the African continent into colonial possessions. Also “Heart of Darkness” Belgium and the Congo
France-Prussian War
1870-1871, The war was caused by German unification, Germans won. The war ended with the treaty of Frankfurt signed on May 10, 1871.
What was the treaty of Frankfurt?
Made France give Germany 5 billion Francs, this was supposed to hurt France but it actually helped France and hurt Germany
Kaiser Willhelm II was built different, what was different?
Born with a withered left arm from birth, this may have affected his personality.
Who was Queen Victoria to George, Willhelm, and Nicholas?
Grandmother to George(France) and Willhelm(Germany, Great aunt to Nicholas(russia)
Who was the Triple Entente?
Russia, France, and Britain
Who were the Triple Alliance?
Germany, Austria-Hungary, Italy (Italy later left to join the Entente and was replaced by Ottoman Turkey)
What was the Schlieffen plan supposed to do?
Developed by German High Command in 1905 as a quick means to defeat France in any possible war
Who was Otto von Bismark?
“Great Juggler of Europe”, Master diplomat, made the Triple Alliance which was a mutual defense pact. Also was able to form the agreements with Russia concerning the Balkan states - 1887 - Reinsurance Treaty
What was the Bosnian Crisis?
Germany threatened to use military force against Russia, who considered itself protector of Slavs in region. Austria-Hungary pulled closer to Germany —– This happened because of Austria-Hungary annexing Bosnia
