Lecture 12 Flashcards
lining, protective and secretory. Defined by morphology
Epithelium
supportive, structural. Defined by the presence of the extracellular matrix
Connective
contractile. Defined by its function
Muscle
irritable, responsive. Defined by its function
Nerve
made up mostly of glycoproteins and water. Surrounds the cells and makes up most of the ECM
Ground Substance
Collagen is the most common, making up large parts of connective tissue, such as bone and tendon. There is also elastin, which provides “stretchability” to tissues
Protein Fibers
at interfaces between epithelium and connective tissue
Basement Membranes
sews cells together
Tight Junctions
less restrictive but still holds cells together
Desmosomes & Hemidesmosomes
transfer of contents without having to pass through the cell membrane
Gap Junctions
secretory vesicles released through exocytosis, most common
Merocrine
form secretions intracellularly and then rupture, sebaceous gland in scalp
Holocrine
form secretion by pinching off a portion of the plasma membrane
Apocrine
