What is atrial fibrillation?
A
An arrhythmia Continuous, rapid, irregular activation of the atria by electrical impulses

What is the most serious complication of atrial fibrillation?
A
Stroke

What is the pathogenesis of stroke caused by atrial fibrillation?
A
- AF means atria don’t empty properly
- stasis in atria, particularly the appendages, causes clotting = thrombus
- Thrombus embolises from left heart
- embolus lodges in brain causing stroke
