What is the pathogenesis of stroke caused by atrial fibrillation?

A
  1. AF means atria don’t empty properly
  2. stasis in atria, particularly the appendages, causes clotting = thrombus
  3. Thrombus embolises from left heart
  4. embolus lodges in brain causing stroke
