Lecture 11 Flashcards
What are the 3 stages of swallowing?
pharyngeal phase
oral phase (2 parts*)
esophageal phase
(POE)
*focus on pharyngeal & oral
The oral phase of swallowing includes oral _____ phase and oral _____ phase.
preparatory
transit
What neurons initiate the pharyngeal phase?
It is iniated by nuerons in the nucleus ambiguus in the medulla
3 functions of pharyngeal phase:
triggering of the swallow response
airway protection
pharyngeal transit of food/liquid into esophagus
Esophageal phase
peristaltic muscle action of smooth muscle of esophagus –> moves food/liquid into stomach
Oral prepatory phase=
formation of bolus
Oral transit phase=
moves bolus posteriorly into oropharynx
The Mouth is held shut by the ____ nerve.
VII-Facial Nerve
Sensory info, such as position of bolus in mouth is realted due to ___. nerve
V- Trigeminal Nerve
Motor aspect of the ___ nerve control chewing movements.
V-Trigeminal Nerve
Senses the arrival of the bolus at the palate.
IX-Glossopharyngeal
The ___ nerve pushes the chewed up bolus up and back against the soft palate.
XII-Hypoglossus Nerve
The ___ nerve pulls the hyoid up & forward, bringing the larynx beneath the back of the tongue.
V-Trigeminal Nerve
The ___ is efferent to the stylopharyngeus muscle only. (Also assists in elevation of hyoid and dilation of pharynx).
IX-Glossopharyngeal
The ___ nerve, in rapid sequence:
- elevates palate to occlude the nasopharnyx
- closes laryngeal vestibules by approx. of vocal folds, ventricular folds & aryepiglottic folds
- contracts middle & inferior pharyngeal constrictors to narrow pharynx & iniate persistalsis
- relaxes cricopharyngeal sphincter to allow bolus to enter esophagus
- iniates peristalsis in the esophagus
