Lecture 10- Lung Defence II Flashcards
What are the 4 fence mechanisms of the respiratory tract?
- Filtration and deposition of pathogens and particulates in upper airways
- Cough reflex
- Mucociliary clearance
- Innate and adaptive immune response
Does innate or adaptive immunity have high specificity?
Adaptive
Which immune response has adaptive memory?
Innate
Where are antibodies found?
Serum and tissue fluids
When are antibodies produced?
In response to contact with immunogenicity foreign molecules
How are antibodies produced?
By plasma cels which have been activated by B cells
Where is IgM distributed?
Circulation
Where is IgG distributed?
Circulation and most tissues
Where is IgA distributed?
In mucosal membranes as a dimer
- circulates the body as a monomer
Where is IgE distributed?
Mucosal membranes- gut, airway and skin
How do antibodies block adhesion of pathogens?
Bind to pathogenic surface antigens
How do antibodies block proliferation?
Bind to surface receptors
How do antibodies cause phagocytosis?
Bind to bacterial surface and allow phagocytes to bind to bacteria
How do antibodies cause lysis, phagocytosis and inflammation?
Activation of complement
How do antibodies neutralise toxic products?
Bind to toxins
