Lecture 10: introduction to functional neurologic disorder Flashcards
also called conversion disorder or physical manifestation of distress that is physiological in nature
intersection of a neurological disorder and functional issue
typically triggered (predisposing factor) by traumatic event that led to symptoms - BUT NOT ALWAYS! - test
* think mva/sexual asult
can have w/o physiological component
sudden onset weakness of limb weakness, limb paralysis, gait disorder, tremor, etc..
fall risk
* however they rarely fall? they look like a massive fall risk. often recover from preturbces well
they have periods of remission - meaning they dont always have those physical manifestations
* can also be walking so absurdly
etiology = unknown
rare
pt good for this diagnosis because were the experts at motor planning and learning stategies for movement
what we do
TEST w/ these pts we limit hands on tx
* they need to learn it for themselves not your cues touching them - this doesnt cause them to learn
* want pt control over movement patterns
* address maladaptive things - think if they’re walking funny break it down and figure out whats wrong
* gradually limit external support - think if they’re leaning on somnething
also called functional movement disorders
abnormal invovlentary movements w/ no phhysiological etiology
patients benefit from intensive in patient rehab program - because it can untrain the psychological component
other symptoms that go along w/ this
knowledge check: what is a trigger for this - traumatic event
knowledge check: treatment strat: limit hands on tx
* do it themsleves - dont want external cueing
