Lecture 10/12 Flashcards

1
Q

Which nutrients were found to have a positive correlation with cognitive function in non-demented patients in the Alzheimer’s Study?

A

Blue nutrients have better cognitive outcomes
-Beta carotene
-Zeaxanthin
Red nutrients have negative correlation
-Trans fatty acids are bad

Q

What are the limitations to studying the relationship between nutrition and cognition?

A

You cannot assure that the lack of something causes dementia and you cannot assume that a lack of correlation in one singular study means that it is not true
—In the denmark study vitamin B12 and Folic Acid deficiency has no correlation with dementia

Q

What is your conclusion about the Danish study on cognition and diabetes?

A

There is no association based on the Danish study that demented and non demented patients within the diabetic group are equal
-A lot of emerging studies have found a mechanistic link between dementia and diabetes

Q

What is the advantage of constructing serum nutrient patterns (NP) as a marker of intake among subjects when studying the relationship between nutrition and cognitive health?

A

-Using SNP overcomes the recall bias especially for subjects with varied cognitive performances that some of them may have hard time recalling information
-Overcomes the issue of inter-individual variability in nutrient absorption and metabolism
