What are the two conditions that social determinants of health influence in an individual, community & jurisdiction as a whole?
They influence the ECONOMIC & SOCIAL conditions
What is the NARROWED definition of SDOH related to health?
It determines whether or not an individual stays HEALTHY or becomes ILL
What is the BROADER definition of SDOH related to health?
It determines the extent of which a person possesses:
the PHYSICAL & PERSONAL resources to identify;
ACHIEVE PERSONAL aspirations, SATISFY NEEDS;
COPE WITH THE ENVIRONMENT

What does the rainbow model consist of when relating it back to SDOH?
It consists of the:
- General socio-economic, cultural & environmental conditions
- Social & community networks
- Individual lifestyle factors
What is the primary factor that shapes health of Canadians?
The living conditions they experiences.
What is the most important SDOH?
Income & income distribution as it determines the QUALITY of other SDOH’s (housing, education, food security, recreational opportunities, childcare, physio, dentistry etc.)
What are the 2 levels of relationships existing between income & health?
1.) The actual income received
2.) The income distribution across populations (more equal income distribution= best predictor of better overall health of a society)
What is the social gradient & where is it most applicable in SDOH?
- It is used to describe the phenomenon whereby people who are less advantaged in term of socioeconomic position have worse health than those who are more advantaged.
- applicable in people who are wealthy (live longer) vs. people are poor (live a shorter life)
What country has the most equal income distribution? & why?
Norway, as they are the most egalitarian economy in the world.
Egalitarian meaning they distribute the wealth across the society where there is not a huge gap between the rich & poor.
Which country is the most top heavy/unequal in regards to wealth distribution? & why?
United States, as they have a large sum of the national wealth going to the 1% of the richest people in any other country.
What are some policies that assist with inequality?
1.) A minimum wage policy
2.) Unionized workplaces (protects workers from being taken advantaged of)
3.) medical health benefits (many company do not offer such for part-time or contract workers)
4.) Providing health benefits for the most disadvantaged populations
What are two most important determinants of dental care utilization?
Income & dental insurance
