what are the 3 groupings for reproductive organs?
- gonads= sexual glands (ovaries or testis)
- ducts
- accessory sex glands
what is the main job of the gonads (sexual glands)?
produce gametes and secrete hormones
what are the 3 main roles of the ducts in the reproductive system?
transport,
receive,
and store gametes
what is the main role of accessory sex glands?
produce materials that support gametes
what do the ovaries produce?
gametes: secondary oocytes that develop into mature ova (eggs) after fertilization and hormones
what hormones do the ovaries produce?
progesterone,
estrogen,
inhibin,
relaxin
what are the 5 ovarian ligaments?
- broad ligament (suspends uterus from side wall of pelvis)
- mesovarium (attaches ovaries to broad ligament)
- ovarian ligament (anchors ovary to uterus)
- suspensory ligament (covers blood vessels of ovaries)
- round ligament (attaches ovaries to inguinal canal)
what are the 3 layers of the uterine tubes?
mucosa (ciliated columnar epithelium);
muscularis (circular and longitudinal smooth mm);
serosa (outer serous membrane)
what are the order of events that occur in the uterine tubes?
- fimbriae sweep oocyte into tube
- cilia & peristalisis move it along
- sperm reach oocyte in ampulla (fertilization within 24 hours after ovulation)
- zygote reaches uterus about 6-7 days after ovulation
