Lecture 1 - Part 3 Flashcards
Levels of knowledge
what are the two levels of knowledge acquired from measuring a child’s knowledge
explicit and implicit
what is explicit knowledge
knowledge that is easily accessible to the child, measured via elicited response
“what colour is that car”
what is implicit knowledge
knowledge the child is unaware of, measured via spontaneous responses (body language)
what is a piaget conservation task
two rows of 6 counters
one row is spaced out
the child is asked which contains more counters
the child (if in pre-operational stage of development) says the spaced out one is greater
what did goldin-meadow et al find with piaget conservation tasks?
gestures produced alongside speech, even if not consistent, can demonstrate partial knowledge
what did goldin-meadow et al find with conservation tasks at ages 1, 2 and 3
age 1 - fail the task through gesture and speech
age 2 - fail the task through speech, show knowledge through gesture
age 3 - pass the test through both gesture and speech
