What is Marilyn Taylor’s Learning Cycle (1986)?
Exploration- In this phase you will be discovering who’s who, policies and procedures. You will be forming as a group and learning about your new team.
Reorientation- Now feeling a little more confident, you will have formed professional relationships with colleagues and dealt successful with incidents.
Equilibrium- You now feel integrated into the team, a valued colleague and are confident in dealing with almost anything that comes your way.
Disorientation- You move to a new team or department, experience incidents you’ve never dealt with before. You feel like a fish out of water and it’s like starting all over again.
What is Bruce Tuckmans (1965) model for team development?
- Norming- High degree of guidance from manager, individual roles are unclear and process usually not well established.
- Storming- Understanding how team decisions are made, purpose is unclear and team relationships are blurry.
- Norming- Relationships are well understood in the team, commitment to team goals and begin to work towards team optimisation.
- Performing- Team is committed to performing well, focus on being strategic and team runs well with little oversight.

What is the IOPC?
Independent Office for Police Conduct oversees police complaints system in England and Wales. They investigate the most serious matters, including deaths following police contact and set the standards by which the Police should handle complaints. They use learning from their work to influence changes in policing.
