Why do we use the DSM?
It helps determine a diagnosis + communicate it.
It standardizes, guides therapy, and allows for statistical analysis.

DSM-V-TR (2022).
What are some criticisms of the DSM-V?
Culture-insensitive
Strong ties to pharmaceutical companies
Med-first approach
Too subjective
What are some big differences between a psych eval and a med eval?
Psychiatric evaluations depend heavily on subjective information with lower diagnostic reliability and little to no external validating criteria.
What is insight-oriented interviewing?
An approach to psychiatric patients.
Consists of learning more about the patient beyond the standard objective information.
