Lecture 1: introduction Flashcards
What was the climate change act in the UK and when?
plan to decarbonise the economy 80% by 2050. It was introduced in 2008
What is the UK’s energy mix?
gas = 40% nuclear = 20% renewables = 20% other = 20%
What carbon cycle are we talking about when referring to carbon concentrations increases?
short term carbon cycle
What is the average growth of atmospheric CO2?
4% per year or 3ppm
What does the number after RCP mean?
Wm^-2 energy above the lower level
What are three good ways of analysing emissions production patterns?
geographical
historical
economic
What did Anderson & Bows (2008) argue?
Current framing of the climate change issue will not bring CO2 stabilisation below 650ppm but other framings will likely result in an economic recession
What did Neumayer (2003) state?
Influence of climate, natural resources availability and transport reliance upon emissions. cold climates more sensitive to changes and therefore emissions increases
What did Peters et al. (2011) state?
Role of international trade upon emissions. Outsourcing of production has also outsourced emissions and introduced new ones with transport costs.
What did Victor and Kennel (2014) state?
Temperature not effective measure of climate but is more evocative for climate change engagement. To increase engagement more there needs to be localised.
