what is a drug?
chemical substances that influences physiological function
what is not included in the chemical substances that are considered drugs?

what is pharmacology?
the study of drugs and their actions
what is neuropharmacology?
concerned with drug induced changes to the nervous system
what is psychopharmacology?
concerned with drug induced changes in mood, thinking, and behavior
what is neuropsychopharmacology?
concerned with chemicals that can disrupt behavior and uses chemicals to understand the neurobiology of behavior
what are psychoactive drugs?
drugs that affect how the brain works and causes changes in mood, awareness, thoughts, feelings, or behavior

what is a drugs chemical name?
the drug’s atomic and molecular structure

classified a drug into a given category and distinguishes it from other drugs in that category (ex. ibuprophen)
what is a drugs brand name?
a trademarked name for a drug that is assigned by the company that markets it (ex. motrin/advil)
what is a drugs street name?
used by individuals who make, use, or sell drugs for recreational purposes
how can drugs be used?
- instrumental drug use
- recreational drug use
what is instrumental drug use?
taking prescribed or OTC drugs as they are intended, to relieve / treat sysmptoms
what is recreational drug use?
using a drug without medical justification for psychoactive effects (for fun)
what is a drug use?
therapeutically taking drugs at the correct dosage
what is drug misuse?
improper or excessive use of a drug
can be intentional or accidental
potentially harmful to user or those around them
what is drug abuse?
improper drug use to achieve pleasurable sensation

physiological or psychological reliance on the drug
