Lecture 1: Intro to Joint Disease Flashcards
What are the 3 types of Joint Disease?
1- degenerative
2- Inflammatory
3- Metabolic/ deposition
What are some features/ categories of degenerative joint disease
1-Primary or Secondary
2-Erosive
3-Neurotrophic Joint (Charcot’s Joint)-a progressive degenerative / destructive joint disorder in patients with abnormal pain sensation and proprioception
4-Spondylosis vs. Spondylosis Deformans:
-Spondylosis deformans is a generalized disease of aging that is secondary to the degeneration of intervertebral disks that affects the vertebral bodies of all animals. It is characterized by the formation of bony spurs or, less commonly, complete bony bridges around the diseased disk and thus reestablishes stability to the weakened amphiarthrodial joint.
Spondylosis is a term referring to degenerative osteoarthritis of the joints between the center of the spinal vertebrae and/or neural foramina.
5-Intervertebral Osteochondrosis (IVOC) vs. Degenerative Disc Disease (DDD)

6. Arthrosis: Arthrosis is a chronic degenerative disease of the joints based on: the degeneration of articular cartilage with a subsequent change in the bony articular surfaces, the development of marginal osteophytes, deformation of the joint, and the development of moderate synovitis.
-Facet, uncovertebral, costotransverse, costovertebral
Diffuse Idiopathic Skeletal Hyperostosis (DISH)–> s calcification or a bony hardening of ligaments in areas where they attach to your spine.
7-Ossification of the posterior Longitudinal ligament
What are the categories of Inflammatory Disease
pg 5 reader
- Rheumatoid type (seropositive)
- rheumatoid
- juvenile chronic arthritis - Seronegative
- ankylosing spondylitis
- Reiters
- psoriatic
- inflammatory bowel (enteropathic)
- scleroderma - Infection (septic arthritis)
What are the categories of Crystal Disease
pg 6 reader
- Metabolic (intra-articular deposition)
- Calcium pyrophosphate deposition (CPPD): Calcium pyrophosphate deposition disease (CPDD) is a metabolic arthropathy caused by the deposition of calcium pyrophosphate dihydrate in and around joints, especially in articular cartilage and fibrocartilage - Metabolic (peri-articular Deposition)
- hydroxyapatite deposition disease (HADD)
- Gout
What are the Roentgen signs of Degenerative Joint Disease?
pg 6
- non-uniform loss of joint space
- osteophyte formation
- subchondral sclerosis
- subchondral cysts
- asymmetric distribution
What are the roentgen signs of Inflammatory Joint Disease?
- Periarticular soft tissue swelling
- uniform loss of joint space
- bone erosion
- subchondral bone destruction
- Juxtaarticular osteoporosis
- periostitis
- mono/polyarticular
What are the Roentgen signs of metabolic joint disease?
- periarticular soft tissue mass
- well marginated bone lesion
- preservation of joint space
- overlapping degenerative/ inflamatory finidngs
