Lecture 1: Intro to Anatomy Flashcards
what is the anatomical position?
- face looking forward
- hands by side
- palms forward
- feet together
- toes forward
What is the arterial supply of the thoracic cage?
Posterior: thoracic aorta branches into posterior intercostal arteries
Anterior: subclavian arteries go to internal thoracic artery which branches out to anterior intercostal arteries
what does the sagittal plane divide the body into?
left and right
what does the coronal plane divide the body into?
front (anterior or ventral) and back (posterior or dorsal)
what does the transverse plane divide the body into?
top (superior) and bottom (anterior)
what is flexion / extension?
flexion pulls in, extension pulls out
what is abduction / adduction?
abduction moves away from midline and adduction pulls towards midline
what is pronation / supination?
pronation is palms/feet face downwards, supination is palms/feet face upwards
what is medial / lateral?
medial is towards midline, lateral is away from midline
what are the vertebrae of the spinal column?
7 cervical 12 thoracic 5 lumbar 5 sacral (fused) 4 coccyx (fused)
what are the ribs?
1-5 are true, rib –> costal cartilage –> rib
6 - 10 are false, rib –> costal cartilage –> costal cartilage –> rib
11 and 12 are floating, no connections
features of a typical rib
- head with 2 facets
- narrowing into the neck
- tubercle on top for joining with vertebrae
- costal groove in which the arteries, veins and nerves sit
label a vertebra
check
joints of the thoracic wall
- intervertebral
- costovertebral
- costotransverse
- intercondral
- sternocostal
- sternoclavicular
costovertebral joint
- head of rib articulates with costal demifacet on two adjacent vertebrae and the associated IV disc.
- exceptions 1st, 11th and 12th which only articulate with one vertebrae
