Lecture 1: Intro & Review of Medical Math (Exam 1) Flashcards
Define Anesthesia
- Total loss of sensation in a body part or in the whole body, generally induced by a drug or drugs that depress the activity of nervous tissue either locally, regionally, or generally (centrally).
- Divided into phases that include the preanesthetic, anesthetic, & postanesthetic periods
Define Analgesia
Loss of sensitivity to pain; relief of pain w/out loss of consciousness
Define Sedation
CNS depression in which the animal is awake but calm & generally uninterested in its surrounding; a term often used interchangeably w/ tranquilization; sufficient stimulation will arouse the animal
Define Tranquilization
State of tranquility & calmness in which the animal is relaxed, reluctant to move, awake, unconcerned w/ its surroundings, & potentially indifferent to minor pain; suffcient stimulation will arouse the animal
Define Neuroleptanalgesia
Hypnosis & analgesia produced by the combo of a neuroleptic drug (like tranquilizer) & an analgesic drug
Define pharmacokinetics (PK)
What the body does to the drugs
Define Pharmacodynamics (PD)
What the drug does to the body
What is the difference btw/ Anesthetist & anesthesioloigst
A anesthesiologist is border certified
How do you convert % solutions to units (mg) per mL
Times the percent by 10
How many pounds = 1 kg
2.2 lbs
Define dose
- Quantity of a drug to be delivered @ a particular time
- Drug doses can be expressed as microgram, milligram, & millileter
Define Dosage rate
Amount of drug per unit of body weight
