Lecture 1 - Interventions Flashcards
What is an intervention?
Are a combination of;
- strategies
- program elements
which aim to;
- change behaviour or improve situations (among individuals, groups, or population)
Intervention definiton - 2
Intervention strategies
Multiply strategies
Multiply setting
Intervention strategies
ex. education, new/change in strategies, environmental/health improvements
Multiply strategy and Multiply setting
both very effective, as it can reach a large number of people in a variety of ways
Intervention Mapping
Effective decision making - of each step of intervention development
planning is explicit / transparent
Steps of intervention mapping (Kok et al.,2016)
- What is the problem?
- What is the objective / desired change? What are the determinants of the problem? Who are we targeting?
- Identify possible intervention methods
- Design program material / pretest material
- Implementation of intervention
- Monitor / evaluate, measure effects / processes
What is the problem?
Check for Needs assessment or problem analysis
Needs assessment - bridge gap between individuals current and desired state
Problem analysis - asses what needs to be changed and for whom?
What is the desired change/objective? Determinants of problem? Target population?
Learning objectives –> What do individuals need to learn/do?
Change objectives –> What needs to be changed in organisations / community?
- Kok et al. 2016 *
1. Create matrices
2. combine (sub)behaviour + behaviour interventions
3. identify behaviour that is targeted by intervention
Determinants
Factors that affect the nature of an outcome
Personal determinants - individual / cognitive factors, etc
External determinants - structural / social factors, etc.
Identify possible intervention methods
How can determinants be influenced to the desired change
(Kok et al. 2016)
- select theory based intervention –> that match determinant
- identified beliefs bundle / translate to practical application (ex. face to face group discussions)
Design program material / pretest material
(Kok et al., 2016)
integrate practical applications –> organised program
Implementation of intervention
Kok et al. 2016
identify program users / supporters –> what are their needs
Network Intervention
People can be influenced by their social network to adopt a new behaviour
Network intervention uses social media to;
meet objectives / reach outcomes
accelerate social change
generate influence
Network intervention strategies
which component of social network will be targeted
Induction
individual
segmentation
alteration
Induction
generating new connections with individuals
ex. word of mouth
Individual level
intervention strategies that target a specific individual in a social network
ex.
broker (bridging)
leader
nodes
Segmentation
intervention strategies that target a specific group within a social network
ex.
mutually exclusive
core-periphery network
Alteration
intervention strategies that change the network itself
- -> adding / deleting nodes
- -> adding / deleting ties
- -> rewriting existing ties
