Lecture 1 - History Flashcards
1
Q
Cognition definition in the past
A
- ability to comprehend
2
Q
Birth of robotics
A
20th century
3
Q
First Bioinspired Robots with brains
A
1950
4
Q
Does robotics have many links to neuroscience
A
no
5
Q
Birth of AI
A
1956
6
Q
What sets AI apart from math, logic, control theory etc.
A
- the goal of duplicating human features
- the application of computer science to make machines operate in real-world environments
7
Q
What did the first AI systems target?
A
- to solve general problems that were defined in formal languages like logic. They target very narrow scopes an became known as microworlds
e. g. mathematical proofs, strategic games - general problem solving systems that do not have any specific knowledge about the application domain (weak methods)
8
Q
What are expert systems
A
- expert systems include domain-specific knowledge for the targeted application. This considerably simplifies the inference process.
- e.g. medical diagnosis systems
- e.g. a systems using 600 rules to identify infectious bacteria, which outputs a certainty factor
9
Q
Is cognition a solved problem?
A
- All cognitive systems build so far are highly specialized
- living creatures are more versatile and flexible
- no unified definition or theory of what cognition is
10
Q
What were the early systems inspired by and how is it nowadays?
A
- Now we have independent disciplines like robotics and computer science that are different from the early brain-inspired systems
