Lecture 1 - Histology and Anatomy Flashcards
Four types of tissues are
Nervous, muscle, epithelial, connective
Function of nervous tissue
Fast communication to muscles and glands from sensors - peripheral and central
Function of muscle tissue
Contraction and movement - has skeletal, cardiac, and smooth muscle types
Function of epithelial tissue
Surface protection and secretion - avascular because of basement membrane
Function of connective tissue
Connect, support, protect (resist traction and compression, mechanical support)
How many anatomical and physiological systems are there?
14 anatomical, 8 physiological
What does the CNS include:
Brain and spinal cord
What does the PNS include:
Everything outside the skull and spine including ganglia and local neurons in organs
Name and briefly describe 3 CNS divisions:
- Sensory: vision, hearing, taste etc
- Integrative: process, information, creation, storage
- Motor: respond to and move in environment (voluntary and involuntary functions)
Purpose of the higher brain/cortical level:
Memory stores, thought processes
Purpose of the lower brain level:
To control subconscious body activities (arterial pressure, respiration, etc) - lizard brain
ANS is made up of:
Sympathetic and parasympathetic division
Purpose of the ANS:
Controlling visceral functions like blood pressure, GI motility, etc
Where is the ANS?
Nuclei in the hypothalamus, brain stem, spinal cord, ganglia outside CNS
How is ANS activated?
By subconscious visceral reflexes to autonomic ganglia then CNS sends reflex back to visceral organs
