Lecture 1 epithelial Flashcards
what are the 5 types of cell junctions?
tight junction
adherens junction
desmosomes
hemidesmosomes
gap junctions
What is the function of tight junction?
fuse adjacent plasma proteins together, fuse very tightly to prevent the leakage of contents from the cells themselves
What is the function of adherent junction?
provide structural support in areas that undergo mechanical stress, adheres several cells together so they function as a unit
What is the function of desmosomes junction?
provides strong adhesion, links intracellularly to intermediate filaments of the cytoskeletons of those adjacent cells
What is the function of hemidesmosomes?
link epithelial cells to basement membrane, connects skin cells to connective tissues which underline those skin cells
What is the function of gap junction?
connects the cytoplasm of 2 cells allows for communication via ions that can carry electric current
