Lecture 1 Flashcards
(half written out)
1
Q
Explain the prevention of a disease
A
Immunise people
improve genetics
PPE
2
Q
Explain the control of disease
A
Remove reservoir Early detection prevention of the disease decrease communicability (decrease spread requiring contact) increase resistance early detection and diagnosis
3
Q
Define Eradication of disease
A
Vaccination (whole herd immunity) depopulate (kill the effected animals) selective slaughter quarantine mass treatment mass immunisation
4
Q
List the aims of prevention
A
- exclude a disease from a population of unaffected animals
- exclude the agent from areas where it is not present
- protect unaffected animals when the disease is present
5
Q
When should you vaccinate or not vaccinate?
A
If its safe and effective their use should be considered if:
- incidence is widespread or increasing in spite of present control measures
- the technology to eradicate is not available
- It does not cause subclinical or carrier states and doesn’t interfere with disease detection
- The disease is endemic
6
Q
List the factors which influence the efficacy for vaccines
A
the % of animals that will get vaccinated
route of ad (administration)
way vaccine is stored and handled
% of immune competent animals in population
