Lecture #1 Flashcards

Q

Are quantity and quality of life achieved together? Why or why not?

A

No, quantity and quality of life are not achieved together. The quantity of life refers to how long (how many years) an individual lives for while the quality of life refers to how the condition of one’s life is. Quality of life is often impacted by lifestyle choices. These choices can include healthy eating vs nonhealthy eating, smoking vs not smoking, exercising vs not exercising and so on. The better your lifestyle choices are, the more likely you are to have a better quality of life.

Q

How are diseases of today different from those of 1900? What is the significance of this in relation to healthcare costs?

A

In 1900, people were much more likely to get infectious diseases. These diseases came on quickly, and you either survived or you died. Today, with vaccinations and other advances in medicine, infectious diseases aren’t killing as many people. The problem today is chronic disease, which can come on slowly and last for decades. Half of adults today have had a chronic disease. Diseases that last for years make healthcare more expensive because of the extended period of treatment. Also, because of all the advances we’ve made over the past 100 years, life expectancy is much higher than before. Longer life expectancies mean longer amounts of time that people could need healthcare, which contributes to the rise in costs.

Q

Can you identify differences between health and fitness?

A
  1. Health-
    a. The state of being free from injury.
    b. Health is not an ill or not ill matter. It is constantly changing. Health concerns of today are replaced by new concerns tomorrow. There are many determinants to health other than am I ill or not ill.
    1. Fitness-
      a. An ability or capacity to fulfill a particular role.
Someone with a greater fitness level has a greater ability to perform work using this fitness parameter. Individuals who have a higher level of physical fitness are able to conduct their job, their activities of living, and have a greater reserve of physical capacity remaining. Life demands do not require them to approach their maximal ability.
