Lecture 1 Flashcards
Watson
changed the world of psychology by arguing that we should study it through objective, measurable phenomena rather than introspection
however, he was criticized because the natural laws he came up with were wrong
Tenets of Behaviorism
- Measurable Outcome: Behavior
- Determinism: There are laws that govern our actions
- Goal: Discover the natural laws that determine behavior
Natural Laws
there are many kinds, ex. gravity
all powerful and come from the world
Skinner
further explored behaviorism
- determinism, free will is an illusion
- Therapy -> behavior modification, if we manipulate your environment we can control your behavior
Nature and Nurture Interaction
always an interaction between both
genes can determine the environment you seek out, and environment can determine what gees are expressed
Learning
the process that underlies relatively permanent changes in behavior caused by experience.
(learning is not behavior change itself, but the internal processes that result in behavior change)
