Lecture 1 & 2 Flashcards
3 definitions of movement analysis
- Unique domain of PT
- Most important assessment tool because of the insight it gives in terms of our patient’s movement problems
- Enables us to treat the source of the patient’s problem rather than just the symptoms and therefore make more permanent changes in our patient’s function
Define kinematics
Study of movement
What are 3 types of motion?
- Translational
- rotary
- curvilinear
Define force
Physical quantity that can cause a change in position or alter the direction or speed of rotation of an object
what 3 principle forces are measured by a force plate?
- downward
- Medial/lateral
- anterior/posterior
Newton’s third law
For every action there is always an equal and opposite reaction
Joint reaction force
The force equal and opposite to one bone acting on another
Ground reaction force
Force equal and opposite to the force acting on the ground
Where is the body center of mass?
s1 or s2
Where does the GRF vector pass through?
COM
What are the 3 qualities of the GRF vector?
- Magnitude (length of vector)
- Point of origin (center of pressure)
- Direction (towards COM)
Center of Pressure
Location of the average weight bearing force (origin of the GRF)
What is the COM commonly used as an indicator of?
Postural stability
When are you at best balance?
When COM is in line with BOS
Pressure
Physical quantity that is a force spread over a given area (P = F/Area)
