Lecture 1 Flashcards
Pages 1-4, August 20th
Chemistry
Properties and behavior of matter
Matter
Anything with mass and takes up space
Chemical Matter
Atoms and Molecules
Element
Periodic Table , cant be broken down
Compound
two DIFFERENT elements, CAN be broken down
Are gases compressibile
YES
Homogenous Mixture
Can NOT see the different parts, looks whole
Heterogenous Mixture
Can see the different parts
2 Types of Properties
Extensive and Intensive
Extensive Prop
Depends on the amount of substance
EX: Burning MORE of something means more energy
Intensive Prop
Does NOT depend on amount. A property that is given to something that does not change.
EX: Flammability, corrosive, reactivity
Physical Change
Observing w/o changing a substance into another
Chemical Change
Consequence of something ( flammability, corrosive, reactivity) ; new substance created
Difference between property and change
Can burn vs burning; can burn is a property while burning is changing
Building blocks of matter
ATOMS
