What was the human-machine relationship before WWI?
The focus was on the machine; if the person couldn’t use it, they were rejected.
What was the human-machine relationship during WWI?
Focus shifted to adjusting the machine instead of the human. Resulted in an increase of available information for users such as altitude for pilots.
What was the human-machine relationship between WWI and WWII?
Slower development. Ford researched driver behaviors, military researched pilots, Edwin Link developed the first flight simulator, and the Hawthorne Effect was discovered.
What was the human-machine relationship during WWII?
Push for determining human capabilities. Fits and Jones developed better control configurations in cockpits.
What was the human-machine relationship after WWII?
Beginning of Cold War led to DoD research. Scope broadened with advent of computers.
What is ergonomics derived from?
Greek ergon (work) and nomos (natural laws).
What is a human factor?
A physical or cognitive property of an individual that influences functioning of technological systems as well as human-environment equilibriums.

What are affordances?
Qualities of an object or an environment that allow an individual to perform an action.
