Q

what is the ‘repeat bout’ effect in relation to DOMS?

A

DOMS is caused by bouts of unfamiliar exercise. Repeating the same bout of exercise after recovery reduces DOMS.

Q

List the general differences between central & peripheral fatigue

A

central fatigue
- CNS fatigue
- reduction in motor units activated
- reduction in motor unit firing
- influenced by CNS arousal
- interplay between motivation and physical capability

peripheral fatigue
- localised
- neural factors: reduced ability of sarcolemma & t-tubules to conduct AP due to fatigue in sodium potassium pump
- mechanical factors: build up of H+ & Pi reduces force per cross bridge cycling, force generated at a given Ca2+ concentration & inhibits Ca2+ release from SR
- energetics: inability to to regenerate ATP due to accumulation of Pi
