What is Web 2.0?
Web 2.0 is about delivering services through browsers, bringing together small contributions to create an explosion of productivity and innovation. The identification that the Web is becoming more important in terms of range of utility.

What is the key idea of individual production and user generated content?
A user can create any type of product of a media, or multimedia platform and upload it onto the internet. The content can be tagged and if public can be made available to the entire world. Tools which have lowered the barrier to entry include:
- Production on the web
- User generated content
- Self-publishing
- Personal Publishing
- Self-expression
A move from traditional media models to citizen journalism or witness contribution.
What is the key idea of harness the power of the crowd about?
The idea that collaborative production and crowd sourcing through communities can solve problems related to cognition, collaboration and coordination in which a single intelligent member of that community group would not be able to tackle.
What is the key idea of data on an epic scale about?
This idea is regarding the recognition of the information age, in that we generate and make use of an ever increasing amount of data, known as datafication. Companies focus on networking and database management as core competences, and have developed capabilities to collect and manage data on an epic scale.
What is the key idea of architecture of participation about?
The idea that a web service is designed around the idea of architecture of participation, and user interactions can continue to improve upon that service. This ideas builds on the Web 2.0 notions of collaboration and user production of generated content, along with encouraging mass participation and an architecture to lower the barriers to participation.
What is the key idea of network effects about?
This is the idea that a web service becomes more valuable, the more people use it, and it encourages ever-increasing numbers and creates a positive feedback loop. The negatives which are created from negative effects are:
- Congestion
- Become locked in a service
What is the key idea of openness about?
The idea of openness is concerning the legal, regulatory, political and cultural issues around the controls, rights and accesses of digital content. An open fashion has always been innate within the internet and Web 2.0:
- Open Standards
- Open Source Software
- Free knowledge and data
- Working in a spirit of open innovation
