Lecture 00 - Introduction Flashcards
What is parasitology
area of biology concerned with the dependance of one organism on another
What is clinical parasitology
a branch of parasitology dealing with animal parasites of humans
What are definitive hosts
hosts that house the adult parasite, where sexual multiplication happens
What are intermediate hosts
hosts that house the larval parasite, where asexual multiplication happens
What are vectors
an invertebrate organism that spreads infection by transporting parasite pathogens from one host to another
What are mechanical vectors
transports a parasite from one host to another without any changes
What are biological vectors
transports a parasite from one host to another and supports the parasites life cycle or multiplication
What are endoparasites
parasites that live inside the hosts
What are ectoparasites
parasites that live on the surface of the body of the host
What is a biologic incubation period
the period between parasitic entry into the host and its appearance in hosts tissues/fluids
What is a clinical incubation period
the period between parasite entry into hosts and the occurance of symptoms
