lectorial week 4 Flashcards
what is research
- collecting info
- analysing data and draw conclusions
- in psych we do this to indicate things rather than prove them
define quantitive research
- Quantitive research is collection of numerical data
- used to find the objective truth about something
- finding should be replicable
how much how often etc
-generalise results to a larger population
define qualitative research
- using words as data, describe feelings about a topic
- find out someone or a group’s subjective experience about something
findings cannot be replicated
good for how and why questions. - how did it feel, why did it happen etc - interviews, experiences
- no hypothesis is being tested.
- less number of participants
- contextual descriptions
what is strengths/weaknesses of quantitative research?
strength: findings can be generalised across a large population
- easier to analyse
limitation: data may not explain complex issues
what are the s†length / weaknesses of quantitative research?
strength: provide more detailed info to explain complex issues.
- is useful in exploring new areas
weakness: finding cannot be generalised to a large population
more difficult to analyse
data collection is time consuming
what is positionally?
- how identify and personalities will influence the research if you are the researcher
applies mostly to qualitative research.
-as beliefs will shape how you approach reach, what kind of questions we ask or how we look.
- different researches may interpret the information in different ways.
it also may affect the participant in qualitative research.
however this also impacts quantise research for example in the wording of a survey question
- also pertinent to consuming research
what are mixed methods?
- mixing both qualitative and quantitive methods
after data collection has taken place for both methods, then these results or data and collate these results
eg . convergent parallel design- both quan. and qual. date are collected at the same time.
- they are analysed separately.
