What is the difference between autonomy and automation?
Automation: Physically situated tools, performing highly repetetive pre planned actions for well modeled task, under closed world assumption.
Autonomy: Pyhsically situated agents, who do not perform only actions but can also adapt to the open world where the environment and tasks are not known priori
Why does it matter that there is a difference between automation and autonomy?
This difference affects the:
Hardware Design : Autonomy requires higher sensing in order to monitor the key elements of the dynamic world.
Prgoramming style: For automation, focus is on formal stable control loops where for autonomy, the focus is artificial intelligence.
Kind of failures : It affects how the system breaks.
