LEC01 Flashcards
Cell Membrane
Amphipathic
A molecule with both hydrophilic and hydrophobic parts, for example, phospholipids.
Passive Diffusion
- Very simply dissolves through the membrane.
- It does not require energy as the gradient is from a high to low concentration.
- The aim is to find equilibrium.
Fluidity
Ability of phospholipids to move laterally (sideways).
What does higher temperature mean for the fluidity?
More fluid due to the higher amount of kinetic energy.
What does lower temperature mean for the fluidity?
More rigid.
What does cholesterol do to the membrane?
Regulates the fluidity, limits it from becoming too fluid at high temperatures, or too rigid at low temperatures.
Integral Proteins
A protein that can partially penetrate the cell membrane.
Fluid Mosaic Model
Describes the fluid and flexible nature of the membrane.
What are the six major functions of membrane proteins? (Just list them)
- Transport (Passive and Active)
- Enzymatic Activity
- Signal Transduction
- Cell-Cell Recognition
- Intercellular Joining`
