what is the principal organ of taste
tongue
what is the largest singular muscular tissue located at the floor of the oral cavity?
tongue
the two divisions of the tongue
Dorsal Surface and Ventral Surface
the superior (top) surface of the tongue; the irregular texture of the tongue
Dorsal Surface
anterior 2/3 of the dorsal surface of the tongue is called
- the body
palatal part
posterior 1/3 of the dorsal surface of the tongue
- the base
pharyngeal part
- inferior (underneath) surface of the tongue
- smooth; shiny and blood vessels and are visible
Ventral Surface
- slight midline groove on the dorsal surface of the tongue
Median Sulcus
v-shaped groove separating the base and body
Terminal Sulcus
- a small circular opening immediately posterior to the center of the “V’ formed by the circumvallate papilla
Foramen Cecum
- small raised projections covering the dorsal surface of the tongue where taste buds are located
Papillae
What type of Papillae has:
- V-shaped, anterior to terminal sulcus
- fewest in number
- large, flat, mushroom shaped papilla
- bitter taste
- found within the posterior end
Circumvallate Papillae/vallate
What type of Papillae has:
- hair-like papilla in the dorsal anterior 2/3 of the tongue
- conical in microscope, numerous, scattered
- doesn’t contain taste buds
- gives the texture of tongue
- flexible, grayish, thin, velvety
- degree of keratinization
- presence of — bacteria
Filiform Papillae
What type of Papillae has:
- small mushroom elevations (hence the name); toadstool
- scattered in between filiform papillae on either sides and apex of the tongue
- gives tongue the reddish color
- sensitive in sweet and salty
- located at the tip of the tongue
Fungiform Papillae
What type of Papillae has:
- sharp, low, parallel fold at the posterior part of the lateral border of the tongue
- 3 to 5 on each side
- sour
Foliate Papillae
