Lec exam 2 Skeletal system Flashcards
What are the basic functions of the Skeletal system?
Support and protect
Movement
Hemopoiesis
Storage of mineral and energy reserve
Hemopoiesis
- Process of blood cell production
- occurs in red bone marrow connective tissue
- Contains stem cells that form blood cells and platelets
How does the skeletal system protect and support?
-framework for body and protects delicate tissues
Bones
Primary organs of the system
form rigid framework for the body
Types of bones
compact and spongy
Compact bone
Also called dense or cortical bone
appears white smooth and solid
What percentage of compact bone is bone mass?
80%
Spongy bone
Cancellous or trabecular
located internal to compact bone
appears porous
What percentage of spongy bone is the bone mass?
20%
Difference between the trabecular bone and the compact bones matrix?
Compact- few open spaces
Trabecular- a lot of open spaces
Advantages of the spongy bone
- lighter in weight than compact bone
- well adapted for distributing stress
- can be remodeled if the bones change
Nutrient foramen
small opening or hole in the bone
artery entrance and vein exit
Diaphysis
elongated, usually cylindrical shaft
provides for leverage and major weight support
Medullary cavity
hollow, cylindrical space within the diaphysis
contains red bone marrow in children
contains yellow bone marrow in adults
Epiphysis
knobby region at the end of long bone
Proximal/distal
