lec 9- phylogeny Flashcards
what is phylogeny?
The evolutionary history in a group (lineage) of related organisms
what approach is used to construct phylogenies?
cladistics which is identifying synapomorphies
what are synapomorphies?
shared features that all members of a clade share with a theoretical ancestor
what are the two ways to draw phylogenies?
“combs” which was used by the founder of cladistics and the “tree” which is more favored
what are taxon?
a group of organisms that share a characteristic
what are clades?
group of taxons
what is the node?
a branch point representing the appearance of a new shared trait (synapomorphy)
what is a monophyletic clade?
a clade that includes all the descendants of an ancestor
what is a paraphyletic clade?
a clade that is missing one of the ancestors descendants
what is a polyphyletic clade?
missing descendants of 2+ clades
what changes taxonomy?
speciation processes
is genetic variation present among all individuals of one species?
yes
where does speciation mostly happen?
in isolated populations
what do cladograms summarize?
speciation branching events
what are birds descended from?
they are descended from dinosaurs and reptiles
what well known animal type is not a monophyletic clade?
fishes
what is one synapomorphy all carnivores share?
carnassial teeth
on what basis of analysis are phylogenies made?
comparing shared traits with an outgroup and other members
what is the parsimony rule?
the tree that needs the fewer steps (traits) to achieve the result are most likely true
are hyena cats and civets all related?
yes
are cats and hyenas sister taxa?
yes
what is homeoplasy?
character state similarity not due to common descent
what is convergent evolution?
independant evolution of similar traits in different clades
what are evolutionary reversals?
reversion back to an ancestral character state
what are the differences between legless lizards and snakes?
snakes don’t have eye lids, hinged lower jaw, movable belly scales and more
when was the discovery of a fossil snake with 4 legs done?
in 2012, 120 Ma, early cretaceous of brazil
what are spurs?
vestigial hind leg bones in living boas
