Lec 17 Flashcards
What are the sections of a gene?
Promoter, coding region, termination signal
Which sections of a gene code for the protein?
Only the coding region codes for the protein
Going from the coding region to the termination signal, which direction is that?
Downstream
The promoter is _______ from the coding region. (what direction?)
Upstream
Is the promoter sequence transcribed?
No
Is the termination signal transcribed?
Yes
Where does transcription start?
+1
Transcription in prokaryotes
Sigma with RNA polymerase has to recognize and bind -35 and -10 on the promoter
Transcription in eukaryotes
Some transcription factors bind to DNA to guide RNA polymerase to promoter, others make DNA available to bind by removing chemical groups
How does transcription end?
Termination signal is transcribed and folds back on itself in a hairpin, which causes mRNA and RNA polymerase to separate
mRNA processing (only in eukaryotes)
Exons: regions of pre mRNA that code for a protein
Introns: regions of pre mRNA that don’t code for a protein
Splicing occurs, removes regions that don’t code for proteins (introns)
