Lec 1 Flashcards
pertains to the restoration or replacement of teeth with artificial substitutes that are attached to natural teeth, roots or implants and that are not readily removable
FIXED PROSTHODONTICS
a partial denture that is luted or otherwise securely retained to natural teeth, tooth roots, and/or dental implant abutments that furnish the primary support to the prosthesis
FIXED PROSTHODONTICS
→ provide proper occlusal function
→ maintain arch integrity
→ maintain occlusal relationship
→ protect and preserve the remaining structures
FUNCTIONS FOR FIXED PARTIAL DENTURE
→ one or two adjacent teeth are missing in the same arch or short span edentulous arches
→ the supportive tissues are healthy
→ suitable abutment teeth are present
→ patient is in good health and wants to have the prosthesis
placed
→ the patient has the skills and motivation to maintain good oral
hygiene
→ patient’s preference
INDICATIONS FOR FPD
→ necessary supportive tissues are diseased or missing
→ suitable abutment teeth are not present
→ the patient is in poor health
→ patient is not motivated to have the prosthesis placed
→ patient has poor oral hygiene habits
CONTRAINDICATIONS FOR FPD
replacement provides a better appearance than the removable partial denture
ADVANTAGE for FIXED PROSTHODONTICS
→ margins along the poor oral health care can increase the risk of recurrent decay and periodontal disease
→ maintenance issues
→ comprises the abutment teeth increasing the risk of tooth loss or
need for endodontic treatment
→ not indicated if the tooth is periodontally compromised
DISADVANTAGES for FIXED PROSTHODONTICS
cemented extracoronal restorations that covers the prepared clinical crowns
CROWNS
primary function is to protect the underlying tooth structure, restore function, form, and esthetics
CROWNS
thin layer of dental porcelain or cast ceramic that is bonded to the facial surfaces of the tooth
VENEERS
it is used in situations requiring an improved cosmetic appearance on the anterior tooth
VENEERS
→ a fixed intracoronal restoration
→ luted into the tooth
→ made indirectly (laboratory)
INLAY
a restoration that restores one or more cusps and adjoining occlusal surfaces of the entire occlusal surface
ONLAY
it is used for restoring more extensively damaged posterior teeth needing wide mesio-occluso-distal restoration
ONLAY
there is a missing tooth in between two abutments
BRIDGE
any dental prosthesis that is luted, screwed or mechanically attached or otherwise securely retained to the natural teeth, tooth roots and dental implants that furnish the primary support for the dental prosthesis
RETAINER
a tooth, portion of a tooth, or that portion of a dental implant that serves to support and/or retain a prosthesis
ABUTMENTS
an artificial tooth on a fixed dental prosthesis that replaces a missing natural tooth, restores its function, and fills the space
PONTICS
the portion of the fixed dental prosthesis that unites the retainer(s) and pontics

CONNECTORS CLASSIFICATION:
Rod and Tube
Non-Rigid
→ maintenance of masticatory efficiency
→ improve speech
→ maintenance or restoration of the esthetic qualities of the mouth
and face
OBJECTIVES OF FIXED PROSTHODONTICS
→ loss of one tooth can affect changes in positions and contact relationships of all teeth remaining in the mouth
→ to preserve the contact area
→ to maintain self-cleansing mechanism of tooth
→ to prevent food impaction
SIGNIFICANCE OF KEEPING ARCHES INTACT
→ branch of Dentistry
→ restoration and maintenance of oral function, comfort,
appearance, health of the patient by the restoration of the natural teeth or replacement of missing teeth and contiguous oral and maxillofacial tissues with artificial substitutes
PROSTHODONTICS
replacement of teeth for edentulous or partially edentulous patients by artificial substitutes that are removable from the mouth
REMOVABLE PROSTHODONTICS
BRANCHES OF PROSTHODONTICS
REMOVABLE PROSTHODONTICS
FIXED PROSTHODONTICS
MAXILLOFACIAL PROSTHESIS
→ can be removed from the mouth by the patient during oral hygiene procedures and other purposes
→ replaces teeth for partially edentulous patients
→ some or several teeth can be restored and replaced with
demountable appliance
REMOVABLE PARTIAL DENTURE
True or false
in cases where there is considerable loss of alveolar process
with loss of teeth, RPD is the best option considered
True
→ removable partial prosthesis that is fully tooth supported
→ an erroneous name of removable partial denture
REMOVABLE BRIDGE
→ replacement or restoration of teeth by artificial substitutes that are not removable from the mouth
FIXED PROSTHODONTICS
True or false
for most patients, a fixed partial denture feels more normal than removable partial denture
True
→ non-removable prosthesis that is rigidly attached to one or more abutment teeth to replace lost or missing teeth
FIXED PROSTHESIS OR FIXED BRIDGE
also called fixed partial denture
FIXED PROSTHESIS OR FIXED BRIDGE
→ usually two or more natural tooth or teeth that involves all or nearly all of the surfaces of the clinical crown of a tooth
→ supports the prosthesis to which it is attached
Abutment
→ is the restoration, usually a crown
→ rebuilds the abutment tooth by which the bridge is attached to the abutment and to
which the pontic is connected
Retainer
substitute for the lost tooth, both aesthetically and functionally
Pontic
→ unites the retainer with the pontic
→ joins the individual units of the prosthesis
→ may be rigid (cast and soldered joint)
→ may be non-rigid (dovetail joint)
JOINT OR CONNECTOR
replacement or restoration of teeth or both of stomatognathic and associated facial structures by artificial substitutes that may or may not be removed
MAXILLOFACIAL PROSTHESIS
artificial replacement of a missing body part
PROSTHESIS
→ artificial replacement that restores missing tooth structure by surrounding most or all of the remaining structures with a material such as:
o cast metal
o porcelain
o combination of materials such as metal and porcelain
CROWN
extracoronal restoration that involves all or nearly all of the surface of the clinical crown of a tooth
Full Veneer Crown
→ restoration that usually includes all but one surface of a tooth
→ three quarter crown
Partial Veneer Crown
