What are 2 main functions of a network?
Allow/Restrict access to resources (aka usability & security)
What is a workgroup network?
A peer-to-peer network
Characteristics of a workgroup
- 1 password for each user on every computer they access
- Each computer that share resources act as a server
- Each computer that access the resources act as a client
Characteristics of a domain network?
- Resoureces can be anywhere on the network
- Domain controller (DC) authenticates user & computer accounts
- DC authorise access to resources
When we need a user account?
an user must have a valid user account if they want to log on to Windows network
When we need a computer account?
A computer must have a valid computer account if it wants to connect to a Windows domain
When is NTFS permission applied?
Always apply whether user is local (i.e. interactive), network or remote
To what does the share permission attached to? (and what for NTFS permission)
A computer for share permission and an object (i.e File or folder) for NTFS
Where are the SIDs stored?
The SIDs (in the domain) are stored in Active Directory (AD)
What is a forest?
It’s a collection of AD DS domains that are bound by automatically created 2-way trust relationships.
What is a domain?
It’s a logical administrative unit that is the home for users, computers, and other objects.
What is a tree?
It’s a collection of AD DS domains that share a common root domain and have congiuous namespace
What is an Organisational Unit?
It’s a container within a domain that oganises users, computers, and other OUs.
