leaves Flashcards
name 4 adaptations of leaves
-are green (contain chlorophyll)
-thin (easy gas exchange)
-large surface area (absorb loads of light)
-have veins (helps transporting water around the leaf
why is the underside of the leaf lighter than the top
the bottom contains fewer chloroplasts. sunlight hits the top of the leaf, so more chloroplasts are needed
why is the surface of leaves covered in a waxy layer
to stop water from evaporating out
how do gasses enter and leave a leaf
through the stomata (tiny holes on the underside of the leaf) they are opened and closed by guard cells.
what enters and leaves the leaf
carbon dioxide diffuses in (is a reactant of photosynthesis)
oxygen diffuses out (is a product of photosynthesis)
how does water get into a plant
water diffuses into the root hair cells and gets transported around the plant, until it diffuses out from the leaves
