Learning unit 1 Flashcards
What are the tools used by an IT technician?
-ESD strap
-T15
-Software
-Tweezers
-Screwdrivers
What does the case/chassis contain?
-Power supply
-Motherboard
-Processors
-Memory modules
-Hard drives
-Expansion cards
What does an ESD strap do?
It protects against electrostatic discharge which damages the chips and damages the motherboards
List the type of cases
-Tower case
-Desktop case
-Mobile case (All-in-one case)
Why are tower cases beneficial?
They provide maximum space for working inside the computer
Explain the use of loopback plugs
They’re used to test a network port to ensure that it works
List the type of ports
-VGA
-DVI
-HDMI
-DisplayPort
-Thunderbolt 3 Port
-Audio Port
Explain what an expansion bus does
They allow us to expand the motherboard capabilities
Explain the use of a memory bus
It connects to the North Bridge
What are the main chips controlling communication on a motherboard?
-North Bridge
-South Bridge
What are the uses of the North Bridge?
It’s a memory hub. It’s responsible for high data transfer devices
Why is the North bridge responsible for high data transfer devices and RAM?
Because they need the fastest communication to the CPU
Explain the role of the South Bridge
It controls hard drives, USBs and the internet. Its an I/O controller hub
What is the use of the DMI (Direct media interface) aka internal bus
It connects the North and South Bridge
Define chipset
A group of integrated chips that are designed to work together and are marketed as a single product
What the the various types of electronic communication?
Serial and Parallel
Define a lane
Two serial wires that enable the sending and receiving of data simultaneously
Define a bus
A wire/ group of wires that carry data from one place to another
Why should you never lift a motherboard by its cooler?
It might create air gaps causing the processor to later on overheat
List the main internal components
-Motherboard
-Processor
-Memory modules
-Power Supply
-Expansion cards
Define RAM (Random access memory)
Its temporary storage for data and instructions as they’re being processed by the CPU
What is the role of the DIMM (dual in-line memory module)?
To hold memory, it provides RAM
Explain the role of hard drives
They’re provide permanent storage to hold data and programs
Explain the role of the power supply
It receives and converts house current so components can use it
Describe a form factor
It is standards that describe the size, shape, screw hole position and major features of computer cases, power supplies and the motherboard
What is the difference between Serial connection and Parallel connection
-Serial connection sends 1 bit of data at a time
-Parallel connection sends multiple bits of data at a time
