Learning:Observational Learning Flashcards
Observational Learning
acquiring knowledge, skills, rules, strategies, beliefs, and attitudes by watching others; **Also called Modeling (like role models), Social Learning, and Imitation
Example: learning a dance for cheerleading
Characteristics of Observational Learning
Eliminates trial and error learning; learns in one shot; Takes less time than operant conditioning
Four Main Processes of Observational Learning
Attention, retention, motor reproduction, and reinforcement/motivation
Albert Bandura’s “bobo doll” experiment
Concerned with all the children watching TV should watch what is put onto TVs when they first were on the rise in households; Concerning of violent shows(like Wild Coyote and Road Runner, Tom and Jerry lol)
Does watching aggressive behavior on TV… Cause a person to act less aggressively? Cause a person to act more aggressively?
Concerned that cartoon would either drain aggression out of system, or would model aggressive behavior to happen
Experimentation for Bandura
Children watched video of woman beating a Bobo doll, throwing it around, etc.; Children more attracted to beat up doll and pick more violent toys(like guns and swords); Another group of children watched a nature video; Played with many of the toys, may hit the doll for a bit but then leave
Experiment Round 2
Both groups saw video of beating up bobo doll; However, one group saw woman in video get punished
Results: Group without punishment modeled beat up bobo doll; Group with punishment often avoided it(Since modeled a certain way)
