Q

Define what human rights are

A

Human rights are moral principles that every human being is entitled to, regardless of nationality, ethnicity, gender or religion etc. These human rights are needed for people to live a fair and equal life. A document of human rights was created on 10 December 1948, called the Declaration of Human Rights by the United Nations, an international community. The document has 30 articles (30 human rights) that human beings need.

Q

Understand how Black Americans fought for equal civil rights*

A

They used nonviolent and violent methods. Black nationalist parties often used violent methods and rejected peaceful protesting (some criticised MLK). Some wanted to have firearms to protect themselves and Black Americans, such as the Black Panthers (a political party and private army of 2000). Some Black Nationalist and radical parties include the Black Panthers, Nation of Islam (A islamic and Black nationalist movement) and the SNCC (Student Non-Violent Coordinating Committee) under chairman Stokely Carmichael from 1966. Two of the riots that occurred was the Watts Area, Los Angeles in August 1965 and the Detroit area in July 1967.There were also nonviolent protests and boycotts. MLK’s civil rights movement was one of these. There were also boycotts, such as the ones that happened to businesses during the Birmingham campaign in 1963. The sit-in movement was also one, where the Greensboro four took up all the whites’ lunch bar spaces in 1960 and spread throughout the South. The March on Washington in 1963 was also one of the main ones that occurred, causing a shift in outlook and resulted in the passage of the 1964 Civil Rights Act.

Q

Understand the work Amnesty International does in fighting for human rights*

A

They are a nongovernmental organisation that ensures that all human rights of people are respected. They are a neutral group, and have no government that they work under, making them unbiased. It was founded in 1951 by a British Lawyer Peter Benson. It aimed to publicise the countries and governments that violated human rights and embarrass them into changing their ways. They initially did this by writing letters to leaders who imprisoned people unfairly

Q

Describe a human rights issue in the world today

A

A main human right issue that is happening in the world today is the violation of the right to equality. In many countries, people still aren’t getting equal rights compared to others. For example, in the USA, the Black Lives Matter movement shows that African-Americans are still not getting the same rights as their white counterparts. Many are killed in racially motivated hate crimes, and are subject to police brutality. Some Middle Eastern and African countries, such as Afghanistan and Saudi Arabia don’t give their women equal rights. They are limited in their freedom of movement, education, and healthcare services, unlike males in the same country.
