United Declaration of Human Rights
Was document created by the United Nations after WW2 to keep peace between countries and make sure something like that wouldn’t happen again
Separate but Equal
it was designed to keep Blacks and Whites separated and bypass the Constitution under the guise that they had equal opportunities but were still equal.
Segregeation
A system used to keep people of different race, religion, sex etc. separate through physical dividers and laws
Desegregation
The ending of a policy that enforces segregation
Intergation
Ending segregation and providing same and equal opportunities for both races
NAACP
National Association For the Advancement of Coloured People. They were a political organisation that worked to abolish segregation and discrimination against African-Americans
Jim Crow Laws
Refers to a set of laws that restricted the rights of non-whites, especially in the South from the 1860s-1960s. Jim Crow is a derogatory name for a African-American.
Voter Registeration
In order to gain the ability to vote, Americans had to register. For Black Americans this was made virtually impossible in the South.
Black Lives Matter
A political and social movement that began in the USA in 2013 to fight racism against Black people and police brutality against them. It started with the shooting of Black unarmed teenager Trayvon Martin
Amnesty International
A nongovernmental organisation that works with the media to expose countries, governments and leaders for violating huamn rights
Prisoners of Conscience
A person that is imprisoned of physically restricted due to their political, religious or other beliefs, their race, gender, colour etc. but has not used or advocated violence and/or hatred
